I wanted to make a WrestleMania related post about the event itself, not this year’s incarnation, because I want to see if talking about that will get me at least a little bit excited about WrestleMania 31, which is in only thirteen days now. Unfortunately the current product isn’t doing nearly enough to get me excited outside of maybe a few matches that have me mildly intrigued. But I don’t really want to talk about that at all today – everything about that will be saved for predictions in a couple weeks.

So, I think I may make a few lists – I don’t know if I will talk about each item on the list at length, or if I will just list things. I’m going to at least put up a 31 favorite matches list, a 10 (or so) least favorite matches, and then maybe a few other things. We’ll start with the best. I don’t think it’s going to be a top 31, because I don’t know if I can put everything in an order, so it will just be my thirty one favorite matches. In fact, it will probably go in chronological order, least recent to most recent. You’ll have to keep in mind, this only goes as far back as WrestleMania 15, as I’ve seen no WrestleMania before it (And I watched WM15 ONCE and it was probably over a decade ago.) Hopefully for next year I will extend my WM watching tradition to include all of them, because WWE Network for only $9.99, so I can say I’ve seen them all. I intended to do that this year, but I realized it three weeks too late to do it.

WrestleMania 16:

Triangle Ladder Match for the WWF Tag Team Championship
(c) The Dudley Boyz (c) vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge and Christian

Ah, the days when tag team wrestling was actually relevant and good. Good times. What more can be said than three of the best tag teams in wrestling history in a ladder match at WrestleMania? Easily the standout match on an otherwise lackluster card. But, since it’s not the first time an incarnation of this match will be on this list, I will not harp on this one a lot.

WrestleMania 17:

TLC Match for the WWF Tag Team Championship
(c) The Dudley Boyz (c) vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge and Christian

And this match is why. What’s better than them in a ladder match? A TLC match. This, for a long time, was my favorite match, ever. And while I don’t think it’s my number one anymore, it’s still up there. Who will ever forget Edge diving off the tall ladder and Spearing Jeff Hardy while he hung in midair? That’s one of the best moments in wrestling history. That and Matt and Bubba crashing through four tables, Jeff crossing the top of three ladders, and so on.

No Disqualification Match for the WWF Championship
The Rock (c) vs. Stone Cold

I’m not sure which of their matches is my favorite – I would probably say their third match is my favorite, because, while this was awesome, it did end by a ton of chair shots. And knowing what the Austin heel turn ended up at, it was kind of a bust.

Street Fight
Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon

This match is one of several that made it on here because I needed some spots to fill. I love the match, but I didn’t think it would make the list. You wouldn’t think a Vince McMahon match would make the list because he’s a 50+ year old man, not a trained wrestler. And Shane is only better because he’s young. But you may be surprised to know that three of the four Vince matches are on this list, for different reasons. (The one that didn’t make it was Bret because that was crap.) What this match lacks in technical ability, it makes up for in storyline and basically an awesome ending sequence which ends with a Van Terminator.

WrestleMania 19:

Stone Cold vs. The Rock

The third of their epic trilogy, and probably my favorite. I was always more of a Rock mark back in the day, so the fact that he won might have had something to do with it. And perhaps it benefits from J.R.’s commentary considering he knew it was Austin’s last match. (Obviously J.R. called the other ones, too.)

Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels

An amazing match between the two best wrestlers of their generation that stole the show on a stacked card. No question about it.

Triple Threat for the WWF Women’s Championship
Victoria (c) vs. Trish Stratus vs. Jazz

I would be surprised if someone doesn’t yell at me for including this, and another women’s match, over some matches that I haven’t listed. But that’s too bad, it’s my list. For a long time this was probably my favorite women’s match, even if I’m not as fond of Trish as many are.

Street Fight
Vince McMahon vs. Hulk Hogan

Again, another Vince match. Considering I’m not a big Hogan fan either, you’d probably wonder how it’s here. But it is significant and I mean, the image of Vince’s bloody face coming over the apron is one that will live on forever.

WWE Championship
Kurt Angle (c) vs. Brock Lesnar

This match, while very good, was another that made it on here after I’d gone through ones I knew I had to have on the list. While it was great, I feel like the only thing it’s really known for is Brock’s botched Shooting Star Press.

WrestleMania 20:

Triple Threat for the World Heavyweight Championship
Triple H (c) vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit

The best WrestleMania main event bar none, leading to one of the best moments of wrestling history. It’s too bad it never happened.

WWE Championship
Eddie Guerrero (c) vs. Kurt Angle

What more needs to be said than Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle?

WrestleMania 21:

Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Edge vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit vs. Christian vs. Kane

One of the best ladder matches in wrestling history, still probably the best Money in the Bank ladder match as well. Shelton running up the diagonal ladder to clothesline Jericho off was amazing.

Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels

One of the best matches in wrestling history.

Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero

Very good match, but was one of the last few added to the list.

Undertaker vs. Randy Orton

Great match – the match that Undertaker should have lost at WM. HELLO, Legend Killer. Duh.

WrestleMania 22:

Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Rob Van Dam vs. Matt Hardy vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Ric Flair vs. Finlay

Not as good as the first, but still good. Some bias on this as I was there live and RVD was my favorite at the time, so there’s no question that the match that led to my favorite wrestler winning his first/only WWE Title would make it on here.

Hardcore Match
Edge vs. Mick Foley

Best match on the show, saw a Spear through a flaming table live.

No Holds Barred Match
Shawn Michaels vs. Vince McMahon

The third Vince match, also includes some of the “being there live” bias, as it’s really a two spot match.

WWE Women’s Championship
Trish Stratus (c) vs. Mickie James

Definitely my favorite women’s match on WM ever, Mickie is awesome.

WrestleMania 23:

World Heavyweight Championship
Batista (c) vs. Undertaker

One of very few bright spots on this otherwise terrible show.

WrestleMania 24:

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship
Randy Orton (c) vs. John Cena vs. Triple H

I know this isn’t one of the best matches or anything, but considering how much of a huge Orton fan I was at the time, seeing him defend the title against Superman and Backstage Politics, thinking he had no chance of winning, and then ending up getting the victory – I remember screaming in elation. One of the few times I can remember actually “marking out.”

World Heavyweight Championship
Edge (c) vs. Undertaker

Severely underrated.

Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair

Honestly this is here in case people would still kill me if I didn’t include it. It’s a great match but I’ve never really cared that much about Ric Flair to think that his last match is an automatic five stars, can’t be touched match.

WrestleMania 25:

Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker

The best match of all time, despite the fact that I could call the finish two seconds before it happened.

WrestleMania 26:

Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker

Not quite as good as the first, but still incredible.

World Heavyweight Championship
Chris Jericho (c) vs. Edge

Underrated.

WrestleMania 28:

WWE Championship
C.M. Punk (c) vs. Chris Jericho

Truly the best match of the show. I could watch Punk vs. Jericho every week.

Hell in a Cell Match
Undertaker vs. Triple H

Great match, although not the best on this show. Build was great (well, once they said Hell in a Cell), and I truly thought it was done when Taker took a Sweet Chin Music and a Pedigree. That moment when he kicked out was amazing.

WrestleMania 29:

C.M. Punk vs. Undertaker

Very good. Punk should have won.

WrestleMania 30:

Daniel Bryan vs. Triple H

Possibly the best opening match in WM history.

Triple Threat for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Randy Orton (c) vs. Batista vs. Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan finally wins the WWE Title in the main event of WM.

Honorable Mentions:

WrestleMania 16:

Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match for the WWF Championship
Triple H (c) vs. The Rock vs. Mick Foley vs. Big Show

Good match, but too much interference

WrestleMania 17:

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit

Angle vs. Benoit, what more than needs to be said? The fact that it’s not their best ever match is what makes it an honorable match.

Undertaker vs. Triple H

Great match, Chokeslam to who knows where is awesome.

WrestleMania 20:

2 on 3 Handicap Match
The Rock’n’Sock Connection vs. Evolution

Fun.

WrestleMania 22:

Triple Threat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Kurt Angle (c) vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton

Good match, was there live. Too short for me to put it in the top 31. Orton should’ve won, too.

WWE Championship
John Cena (c) vs. Triple H

Bias from being in the crowd, booing the crap out of Cena.

WrestleMania 23:

WWE Championship
John Cena (c) vs. Shawn Michaels

Very good, but Cena should try selling.

Every Money in the Bank Ladder Match that wasn’t listed (WrestleMania 23-26)

Because ladder matches are always fun.

WrestleMania 25:

Extreme Rules Match
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy

Hardy vs Hardy at WrestleMania. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite good enough to consider putting it in the top 31.

WrestleMania 27:

Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio

An underrated match on an otherwise god awful show

WrestleMania 29:

The Shield vs. Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Big Show

A good, fun, opening match, although not top 31 worthy.

WrestleMania 30:

John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt

A good match, even though Cena won.

WWE Divas Championship
A.J. Lee (c) vs. the World

A fun match, definitely the best women’s match since Trish/Mickie. I can’t put it in the top 31 because it’s a pile of people match, but it’s A.J. owning the women’s division which she basically did at the time.

Now, for the worst and/or most disappointing matches of the past 15 WrestleManias. These are in no real order, outside of the ones that came to mind first.

Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler (WrestleMania 27)

An atrocity to all of professional wrestling. Wasted 30 minutes on an already disappointing card with boring work done by a commentator and a 50+ year old, to give the 50+ year old a WrestleMania moment he didn’t need,  only to be dragged on an on because Lawler wouldn’t just end the match, then the computer GM got involved and gave Cole the victory, so the old guy didn’t even get the WM moment. WHAT WAS THE POINT? WHY DO YOU HATE YOUR FANS WWE?

WWE Championship
Triple H (c) vs. Randy Orton (WrestleMania 25)

A lackluster match and definitely my biggest disappointment as a wrestling fan, having had been so excited for this match only for Orton to lose when he had to win this match. There will never be an appropriate excuse for this.

WWE Championship
The Miz (c) vs. John Cena (WrestleMania 27)

A horrific and boring match between Cena and a champion that quite clearly didn’t seem like he belonged in the main event of the the biggest show of the year made for the worst main event in WM history.

Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar (WrestleMania 30)

A bad, boring match that saw the Streak broken by someone who didn’t have any business ending the Streak.

John Cena vs. The Rock (WrestleMania 28)

AND

WWE Championship
The Rock (c) vs. John Cena (WrestleMania 29)

It was so bad the first time they did it again!

WWE Intercontinental Championship
Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Big Show (WrestleMania 28)

Not only a bad match, but why did we end Cody’s long IC title reign to give, of all people, Big Show a WrestleMania moment in 2012??

Dolph Ziggler and Laycool vs. John Morrison, Trish Stratus, and Snooki (WrestleMania 27)

Dolph Ziggler and John Morrison stuck in a six person match that includes Snooki.

World Heavyweight Championship
Daniel Bryan (c) vs. Sheamus (WrestleMania 28)

You could have a solid bout between one of the best wrestlers in the business today against a babyface star on the rise who’s solid in the ring, but you job out the more talented competitor in eighteen seconds.

Intergender Handicap Match
Booker T and Sharmell vs. The Boogeyman (WrestleMania 22)

Terrible and also a piss break, as I left my seat in the arena to go get food while it was happening.

WWE Championship
John Bradshaw Layfield (c) vs. John Cena (WrestleMania 21)

Cena literally wins his first WWE title with six offensive maneuvers.

Battle of the Billionaires Hair vs. Hair Match
Bobby Lashley vs. Umaga (WrestleMania 23)

A terribly overbooked match between two uninteresting competitors, surrounded by Vince and Shane McMahon and Donald Trump shenanigans, with Austin as the referee, and a barber chair that got an entrance.

Sumo Match
Big Show vs. Akebono (WrestleMania 21)

Whomever decided we needed to see Big Show in a sumo outfit should be shot. Also, Michael Cole trying to be all serious about this on commentary is laughable.

Randy Orton vs. C.M. Punk (WrestleMania 27)

Just disappointing. Not bad, but disappointing.

World Heavyweight Championship
Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Jack Swagger (WrestleMania 29)

The match was bad, Jack Swagger had no business in a World Title match at WM, and Dolph didn’t cash in afterwards.

Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg (WrestleMania 20)

The biggest bust in WrestleMania history.

No Holds Barred Match
Vince McMahon vs. Bret Hart (WrestleMania 26)

Boring, overbooked garbage.

WWE Women’s Championship
Melina (c) vs. Ashley (WrestleMania 23)

It was so bad that Ashley cried about it backstage afterwards.

WWE Women’s Championship
Trish Stratus (c) vs. Christy Hemme (WrestleMania 21)

A bad match, hurray for the playboy push.

12 Diva Tag Match (WrestleMania 26)

Who decided Vickie Guerrero needed a WrestleMania moment?

Kane vs. The Great Khali (WrestleMania 23)

THE GREAT KHALI.

Alright, so those are my lists. Hope you liked them. I’m not sure if it will help get me excited for WM31, but it was worth a shot.
